The Pressure Backhand in Tennis

For many of us, the backhand in tennis, and specifically the double handed backhand, is our weaker groundstroke. This can cause nerves when we have to hit a double handed backhand in a pressure situation, such as a return of serve from the ad side in a match. And I’m sure many of you have experienced the psychology in tennis that tells your opponent to pick on your weaker stroke – so they repeatedly hit to your backhand in tennis!
One way to counteract your backhand weakness is to acknowledge your nerves, take a deep breath, and become more confident in your double handed backhand stroke by learning how to keep a loose grip, set your racquet and feet, and accelerate through the shot by bringing your top hand to the opposite shoulder. Watch my video for detailed instruction on how to accomplish this confidence! Once you do, you’ll be executing those pressure backhands without difficulty – and your weaker shot may become your stronger one
