If you think of your return of serve tennis stroke as a routine that you do every time you return a serve, you’ll be much more confident and successful.
Different players have different techniques for tennis return of serve that make up their routines. Some walk up and back over the baseline, some sway back and forth on their toes, some bounce in place, before making an approach and hitting the return. No matter what their routines are, they are physically and therefore mentally ready to receive the serve. Whatever you do, don’t stand still and don’t stay where you begin and let the ball come to you. Instead, think of the return as an approach shot.
The tennis techniques you should use for the return of serve are:
-move your feet so you are activated
-stay low
-keep your energy level high
-be mentally ready
-watch the ball
Now, the most important tennis technique for this shot: make an approach move toward the incoming ball. Go to the ball with your footwork. Take a couple of steps in, split hop and take the ball from inside the baseline. If you follow your unique routine using these techniques for return of serve, tennis will be much more enjoyable and you’ll see your returns improve.
